1. To whom was the title 'Sawai' conferred ?

Answer : Jantar-Mantar is an astronomical observatory. It was made to study the movements of the sun, the moon and the other planets.

'Jantar' means instrument and 'Mantar' means formula. It was called so because by means of it the accurate time of the day was determined.

Answer : Jantar-Mantar is an astronomical observatory at Delhi. It was made to study the movements of the sun, the moon and the other planets. Jai Singh named the observatory 'Jantar-Mantar'. 'Jantar' means instrument and 'Mantar' means formula. It was built at Delhi between 1724 to 1730. The observatory is dominated by a huge Sundial known as Samrat Yantra which was used to measure the time of the day accurate to within half a second.

2. Narrate the story behind the building of the observatories.

Answer : The observatories were built by Sawai Jai Singh-II, the ruler of the princely state of Amber. There is a story behind the building of the observatories. The Mugal Emperor raised him to the rank of Governor of Agra and later on Malwa. Once, at the court of the Mugal Emperor Muhammad Shah, Jai Singh found that the Hindu and the Muslim astrologers were in intense argument over certain planetary positions. It was impertative to know the accurate position to determine an auspicious hour for the emperor to set out on an expedition. Jai Singh offered to rectify the astronomical tables and the Mugal Emperor readily accepted it. As a result the Jantar-Mantar at Delhi was built to study the movements of the sun, the moon and the planets.
