1. What are the great truths of modern life which Hughie Erskine couldn't realise?

Answer : The great truth of modern life that Hughie Erskine doesn't realise is that if one is not wealthy then there is no use of being charming. Romance is the profession of the rich, not the profession of the unemployed. It is better to have a permanent income than to be fascinating.

2. What was Hughie Erskine not able to do?

Answer : Hughie was a charming young fellow. He was wonderfully good looking with crisp brown hair, clear cut profile and grey eyes. He was as popular with men as he was with women. But he did not realise the truth of modern life as he was not able to earn a permanent income.

4. What would the Colonel say to Hughie about their engagement?

Answer : The beggar model in the Trevor's studio was standing on a raised platform in a corner of the studio. He was wizened old man, with a face like wrinkled parchment and a most piteous expression. Over his shoulders was flung a coarse cloak, all tear and tatters. His thick boots were patched and cobbled. He leant on a rough stick and on the other hand he held out his hat for alms.

8. What did Hughie do with the beggar model in the Trevor's studio?

Answer : The beggar looked so wretched that Hughie could not help pitying him. He found some sover eigns and coppers and gave them into the beggar's hand.

9. Why did Trevor burst into a roar of laughter?

Answer : At the Palette Club, Hughie happened to meet Trevor. There they talked about the beggar that Hughie saw at Trevor's studio. By the by Hughie said to Trevor that he gave some sovereigns to the beggar as alms. Hearing this Trevor bursted into a roar of laughter.

10. How was Hughie rewarded for his generosity?
