Lesson— 3

A Curious Mind

COMPLETE CHAPTER SUMMARY

The chapter "A Curious Mind" is written in the form of a play featuring three children: Nikita, Orgo, and Meera. The story begins with Orgo asking Nikita why the sky changes its color during sunset. Nikita gets annoyed because she is busy painting and does not know the reason. Their cousin Meera explains that Orgo's questioning nature is a sign of a curious mind, which is essential for scientific discoveries.

To inspire them, Meera shares the life story of India's great physicist, Sir C.V. Raman. While on a sea voyage in 1921, Raman's curiosity about why the sea looks blue led to the groundbreaking discovery of the scattering of light, known as the Raman Effect. For this, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 and India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1954. The lesson teaches students the value of being inquisitive, respecting others' time, and celebrating National Science Day on February 28 to honor scientific progress.

(Chapter Summary in Assamese)

HOTS QUESTIONS WITH ANSWERS

Q1. Why did Meera say that "Curiosity is the root of many great discoveries and inventions"?

Answer: She said this because unless humans wonder "why" or "how" things happen—just like C.V. Raman wondered why the sea is blue—they will never conduct experiments to find the hidden truths of nature.

Q2. How should we balance our curiosity with good behavior according to Meera?

Answer: We should check if the other person is busy before asking questions. If they are busy, we should wait patiently or politely ask them when they will be free instead of irritating them.
