Lesson— 4

My Land

COMPLETE CHAPTER SUMMARY

The poem 'My Land' by the Irish poet Thomas Osborne Davis is a moving tribute filled with patriotic pride. In this short poem, the poet paints a glowing portrait of his home country. In the first stanza, he uses admiring adjectives like rich, rare, fresh, fair, and dear to highlight the physical beauty and exceptional identity of his birthplace.

In the second stanza, the focus shifts to the exceptional character of its citizens. He asserts that the men of his country are unmatched in bravery, while the women possess unshakable courage and strength of heart. The poet concludes with a deep personal declaration of his patriotism: he states that he is completely willing to give up his life to protect his country's freedom, and he would consider such a sacrifice to be a glorious and divine fate.

The lesson also teaches students practical ways to show love for their country through civic duties, introduces them to brave historical figures like freedom fighter Bhogeswari Phukanani, and fosters pride in cultural landmarks like Charaideo Maidam.

Dear Jannat,

How are you? I am fine here and hope you are doing well with your family.

I am writing this letter to share my wonderful experience of visiting the Rang Ghar in Sivasagar last week with my family. It is a majestic two-storied historical monument built by the Ahom kings. Standing there made me feel so connected to our rich history. The unique architecture shaped like an inverted boat is truly amazing to see in person.

Please let me know when you plan your next vacation. You should definitely visit this place. Take care of your health.

Your loving friend,

Jahan
